Dandruff Simple Herbal Treatment


There is hardly anybody who has never had any problems with dandruff as this ailment affects 9 out of every 10 people in varying extent. The formation of white flakes, greasy clumps accompanied by itching can be due to an extremely dry scalp, or because of excessive oil or sebum secretion.

Modern lifestyle has a major role in the increasing number of people suffering from dandruff. The stress, fatigue, increasing workload and consequent loss of sleep is a major cause of dandruff. Using harsh, chemical based hair care or styling products over a longer period can also dry up the scalp, leading to dandruff.

Herbal Treatment of Dandruff

Zinc Pyrithione:

 Most widely used active ingredient used to treat dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema and numerous other skin and scalp disorders. Synthesized in the 1930's, has strong anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.

Salicylic Acid:

Naturally found in willow tree bark. Key additive in many skin care products. Causes skin cells to slough off more readily keeping pores open.

Tea Tree Oil:

Strongest known natural antiseptic. Also has punitive skin penetrating capacity as an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, germicide and fungicide. From the Australian plant Melaleuca Alternifolia.

Peppermint Oil:

Natural properties include penetrating and anelgesic qualities.

Guava:

Herbal analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and antiseptic.

Wild Cherry:

Natural root bark extracts astringent.

Chamomile:

Herbal anti-inflammatory.

Horsetail:

Herbal storehouse of vitamins and minerals, revitalizing properties.

Nettle:

Herbal anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine, rich in minerals.

Dandruff treatment with Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seeds are considered to be a very effective "home remedy" in the treatment of dandruff. Soak 2 tablespoons of Fenugreek seeds in water and leave overnight. Grind this into a paste and apply all over the scalp and leave for half an hour. Wash off hair thoroughly using soap-nut (ritha) solution or shikakhai.

Anti-dandruff hair care products

There are a wide variety of anti-dandruff shampoos available in the market today which are also effective in the treatment and prevention of dandruff. It is important to go in for a reputable brand and ensure that the shampoo is not too harsh for your hair type. Deep cleaning dandruff shampoos with Zinc PCA combined with Fenugreek are found to be the best at cleansing the scalp and hair. Zinc PCA helps regulate the sebaceous gland - reducing oils that lead to bacteria, dirt and infection. Emu Oil active ingredients are anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial and help ward-off bacteria and fungus.

Using lime for the treatment of dandruff

A teaspoon of fresh lime juice in the last hair rinse combined with a light weight conditioner can also be effective to treat dandruff. Furthermore, this adds much needed luster to the hair as well.

Fenugreek Seeds Homemade Dandruff Cure

Fenugreek seeds can be used as a simple homemade dandruff cure. Fenugreek (also known as Methi) is very popular in Indian cooking and the seeds can be purchased from most supermarkets and health stores these days. A 100 gram bag should cost you no more.

•    Take 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds and soak overnight in water

•    In the morning grind the soft seeds into a fine paste

•    Apply this paste all over scalp and leave for half an hour

•    Rinse off thoroughly with soap nut solution

•    A teaspoon of lime juice on the last rinse will work wonders

  1. Green Tea is one of the best treatments to get rid of dandruff. Dr. Oz did a bit on using green tea to treat dandruff a while back. It is easiest if you simply add green tea to your water.
