Common Herbs Used in Diabetes


Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as "diabetes" means "sweet urine." Diabetes mellitus means "to flow, honey" in Greek

Diabetes affects the body's ability to produce or respond to insulin. Insulin is a hormone that allows blood glucose (blood sugar) to enter body cells and used for energy.

Diabetes outcome beginning defect in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. In diabetes, excess glucose remains in the blood. Elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia) lead to spillage of glucose in the urine.

As a result of high levels of blood glucose, two problems: the body's cells become starved for energy, and over time high glucose levels can damage nerves, eyes, kidneys, heart and blood vessels.

•    The insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)

•    Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)

•    Gestational Diabetes

•    Secondary diabetes

Common Herbs Used in Diabetes 

INDIA KINO, MALABAR KINO

The tree (Pterocarpus massupium) is the source of the Kino of the European pharmacopeas. In fact, it has been used to regenerate functional pancreatic beta cells. Flavonoid epicatechin extracted from the bark of this plant has been shown to prevent alloxan-induced damage in rat beta cells.

Gymnema Sylvestre (Gurmar, Cherukurinja)

Gymnema helps the pancreas to produce insulin in type 2 diabetes. It also improves the ability of insulin in the blood sugar in both type I and type 2 diabetes. Some people used to take about 500 mg per day of gymnema extract.

BLUEBERRY LEAVE

Leave the blue berries are commonly used by people for many years for the treatment of diabetes. It is myrtillin more active ingredients (an anthocyanins). His single dose produces beneficial effects lasting several weeks. Blueberry leaves also increases capillary integrity, inhibits free radical damage and improves the tone of the vascular system. It may be also in the treatment of eye diseases, especially diabetic retinopathy.

Asian Ginseng

It has been shown to improve the release of insulin from the pancreas and increase the number of insulin receptors. It also has a direct effect of reducing blood sugar.

GINKGO BILOBA

Ginkgo biloba extract may be useful for the prevention and treatment of diabetic neuropathy in its early stages.

BILBERRY

Reduce the risk of diabetic complications such as cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.

STEVIA

Do not show the direct effect of anti-diabetes, but its use as a sweetener could reduce intake of sugars in diabetic patients.

CINNAMON

Cinnamon is derived from the bark of a tree of the laurel family. In addition to flavor foods, but also relieves gas in the stomach, relieves nausea, and treat loss of appetite. More than a decade, researchers have discovered that cinnamon makes fat cells more sensitive to insulin. Cinnamon increases the conversion of glucose into energy by twenty times. Reduced activity of free radicals helps slow the progression of diabetic complications.

  1. Very informative blog here. Artichoke and buchu are believed to be effective in the treatment of diabetes. Buchu(Agathosma betulina) is especially recommended for early stage treatment of diabetes. I look forward to reading more of your work.
